It’s easy to understand why the risk of being involved in a car, truck or other motor vehicle accident in Arkansas or elsewhere nationwide goes up at the holidays: It is the single greatest time of the year when people want to be with family and friends.
Seeing loved ones tops the list of reasons that people give for their holiday travel, according to research gathered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Fifty-three percent of Thanksgiving travelers give this as the reason for their trip. That’s more than Christmas, when 43 percent of travel is to visit family and friends, or New Year’s, when that percentage falls to 24 percent.
It also follows that business travel goes way down at the holidays. Normally, this type of travel accounts for about 17 percent of all long-distance trips. But during the winter holidays, that number falls to less than 10 percent.
The average age of the winter holiday traveler is 34-36, and many more of them tend to be men than women.
