“A seat belt has proven to be the single most effective piece of safety equipment drivers and passengers can use to avoid death or serious injury in a motor vehicle crash,” Arkansas State Police Col. Bill Bryant said in a prepared statement about the program. “Sadly, the numbers indicate that people still aren’t getting the message about seat belt use.”
Here are three more revealing statistics about seatbelt use:
Seatbelt Stat No. 1: Nationally, drivers wear seatbelts roughly 87 percent of the time while Arkansas drivers wear seatbelts 74 percent of the time.
Seatbelt Stat No. 2: Of the 333 reported motor vehicle accident fatalities in Arkansas in 2014, more than half of those victims failed to wear seat belts.
Seatbelt Stat No. 3: Wearing a seatbelt reduces the likelihood that car accident victims will sustain serious injury or loss of life by 50 percent.
