The NHTSA’s recent “Traffic Safety Facts” report is more than just good data and reference for our firm’s Little Rock, Arkansas-area personal injury and car accident attorneys. The report also is packed with useful safety advice that can help keep cyclists, motorcycle riders and car drivers safe on the roads that we all must share.
First and foremost, the report, which summarizes cyclist fatalities as the result of road accidents, serves as a powerful reminder that a little courtesy can go a long way when it comes to keeping bicyclists and other riders safe on our roads.
Drivers can do that by taking the following four safety precautions around cyclists:
Driver/Cyclist Safety Tip No. 1: Avoid steering your car or driving closer than three feet to a bicyclist or motorcycle rider.
Driver/Cyclist Safety Tip No. 2: Remain vigilantly aware of nearby bicyclists whenever you open your car door or pull out of a driveway or parking spot.
Driver/Cyclist Safety Tip No. 3: Remain extra alert at intersections or whenever you’re making a left turn or right turn.
Driver/Cyclist Safety Tip No. 4: Take extra precautions around bicyclists and motorcycle riders whenever you spot a yield sign.
Everyone has someplace to be, and time is at a premium. But nothing on your “to-do list” is more important than helping to protect the safety and welfare of everyone who shares our roads and highways.
